Q: What is the official policy in China regarding Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity and how does my firm comply?

A: Due to the heightened awareness of disaster recovery and business continuity planning in light of recent natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina in the US, China has an official policy that their military is the lead organization for disasters. Local officials assist in the efforts as first responders, but the military takes control of search and rescue, recovery and reconstruction processes.

Insurance policies have been difficult to secure for construction projects in China but, as increased exposure to western banking and insurance policies becomes the standard methods of doing business in China, expect disaster recovery and business continuity insurance to become more readily available. Today, most construction projects in large Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen have secured Western style insurance policies. Outside of these major cities, it is still an emerging business.
